PEORIA, Ill. – We’re learning more about the death of a homeless man whose body was found behind a restaurant near Bradley University, and about how he’s received the funeral he was owed.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood says septic shock was the cause of death for Robert Moore, 75, whose body was found July 30 behind the Subway in Campustown.
Harwood says it was caused by “gangrenous lower extremity and poor wound healing.”
Malnutrition was also a contributing factor.
Harwood says Moore – an Army veteran who served in Vietnam – was given military honors last week, and buried at Camp Butler National Cemetery outside Springfield.
Over the years, other Veterans in Peoria County have passed away in the presence of homelessness and have had no one to properly provide a proper disposition for them,” said Harwood, in a news release and on social media. “In these cases, the Peoria County Coroner’s Office has worked diligently with the Peoria County Veterans Assistance to ensure a dignified and proper burial of their remains.”
