PEORIA, Ill. – A resident of a Peoria apartment building is being charged by a Peoria County grand jury with Residential Arson.
The Class-1 felony charge was filed Tuesday against Carlos Almaraz-Alferes, 52. He was arrested by police not long after the March 30th fire at the New Hope Apartments building on Northeast Jefferson.
Officials said at the time the fire broke out in an elevator shaft, and ended up causing $170,000 in damage.
Almost two dozen residents were displaced, thanks in part to water damage caused by sprinklers going off.
Almaraz-Alferes is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday, and is jailed on $20,000 bond.
