PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria City Council is okaying providing violence prevention grants to community organizations — this, after rejecting the funding that would have gone to one Illinois-based group to study the city’s violence problem.
Council members Tuesday night okayed the Violence Prevention Program guidelines, an application form, and the fact it will be available as soon as next Monday.
“We modeled it after a program in Indianapolis run by a foundation…specifically with their American Rescue Plan funds,” said Joe Dulin, Community Development Director. Dulin says the program will eventually be administered by Peoria Police.
Groups applying must be 501(c)3 agencies, and applications will be due September 9.
“What we’re really trying to capture with this is someone to bring a program that can show solid results,” said Dulin. “The categories, I think, are specific enough to give applicants ideas of where they should be focused, but I don’t think are limiting enough to someone who has a program that might be very impactful in our community, from stopping them from applying.”
There is an estimated $1.3 million in funding available this year.
