Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood has identified the woman found dead as 37-year-old Ashley Tankersley, of South Madison Park, Peoria.
The autopsy demonstrated she suffered multiple gunshot wounds on her upper torso and died instantly.
Tankersley was pronounced dead at 1:49 a.m. following brief resusciatative efforts, according to Harwood.
35-year-old Joshua McGee, of Peoria, was arrested Sunday afternoon at the Rail Splitter Rest Stop near Sherman.
McGee was charged with first-degree murder by Peoria County Sheriff’s Detectives.
McGee’s first court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 24.
The case remains under investigation.

UPDATE – 2:12 p.m.
The “person of interest” in connection with a Peoria County homicide is in custody.
Peoria County Sheriff Brian Asbell confirms the person of interest surrendered to Illinois State Police Sunday at the southbound I-55 Rail Splitter rest area near Sherman, Ill., five miles north of Springfield.
Asbell said the person of interest was identified while deputies investigated the death of a woman in rural Peoria County.
Deputies responded to the intersection of Route 150 and Philander Chase Road near Kickapoo around 1 a.m. Sunday. They found the woman, the victim of multiple gunshot wounds, in the ditch line.
The woman was transported to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. Her identity has not been released, pending the notification of family.
The investigation continues.

PEORIA, Ill. – The investigation of the death of a woman found dead in Peoria County is involving the Peoria and Sangamon County Sheriff’s Offices and Illinois State Police.
Peoria County Sheriff Brian Asbell says deputies responded to the intersection of Route 150 and Philander Chase Road around 1 a.m. Sunday. They found a woman down in the ditch line, the victim of multiple gunshot wounds.
The woman was transported to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center and later pronounced deceased. Her identity has not been released, pending notification of her family.
The investigation is ongoing.
Asbell said a person of interest had been identified and was located around 10 a.m. Sunday at a rest stop near Springfield.
The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office and State Police are conducting their investigation at that scene.
