PEORIA, Ill. — History was made in Peoria, Illinois Tuesday night as the city saw the first Black person and first woman to assume the role of Peoria’s mayor.
Dr. Rita Ali was sworn in Tuesday night, after defeating her opponent Jim Montelongo in the election.
Ali acknowledged the history she made during her remarks.
“One of the root causes of prejudice is status inequality,” said Ali. “Electing me to this role helps to address that status inequality by putting a woman and person of color in a leadership role.”
Many of the council members, new and old, expressed their vision of a brighter future for the city moving forward.
“Peoria is going to be better moving forward,” said Ali. “The outlook is very positive.”
Now-former Mayor Jim Ardis expressed the same feelings during his final remarks to the city as mayor.
“I know that we have a lot of obstacles,” said Ardis. “I couldn’t be more excited that the opportunity is presenting Peoria with Dr. Ali and her administration.
“I wish Dr. Ali and her new council nothing but the best going forward. I think Peoria’s best days are ahead.”
Ali said she had a conversation with Ardis before she took over Tuesday night, saying he was helpful to her and is always available should she have any questions.
“I’ve been honored to serve this great community for 22 years,” said Ardis. “I couldn’t have done it without the community and the citizens allowing me to do it.”
