TEUTOPOLIS, Ill. – The Illinois State Police is asking for the public’s help in finding a vehicle that may have been involved in a September 29th crash near Teutopolis that left five people dead and several others injured.
The multi-vehicle crash happened just after 8:40 p.m. Friday night on U.S. Highway 40, involving a semi-truck tanker carrying anhydrous ammonia that leaked on impact.
Effingham County Coroner Kim Rhodes said on Sunday that a preliminary investigation indicated that all five people died from anhydrous ammonia exposure at the scene.
The ISP says around 8:35 p.m., a dark colored vehicle traveling westbound through the intersection of U.S. Highway 40 and Spring Creek Road in Montrose, continued west through Teutopolis on the highway and would have passed the semi-truck tanker.
State troopers are looking at surveillance video that could provide more information about the crash.
Anyone that has information or footage that may have captured the suspect vehicle before or after the crash, is asked to contact Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 8 Investigations at (217) 342-7881.
