SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – As if the Fourth of July wasn’t reminder enough of just how hot it can get this time of year, state officials are still reminding you of things you can do to beat the heat.
July is known as Extreme Heat Safety Month, and being careful in the heat may be a bit of an understatement – even though tips for beating the heat can be pretty obvious.
“We tell folks to kind of stay hydrated,” said Kevin Sur, spokesperson, Illinois Emergency Management Agency. “Avoid any kind of alcoholic beverages, avoid any sugary beverages or caffeinated drinks. Drink a lot of water if you can. The more water, the better it is.”
Sur also says avoiding strenuous activity in the afternoon, when the heat is at its peak, is also a good idea.
“Wear loose, light-colored clothing. It helps reflect the sun. Do not leave kids or pets in cars for prolonged periods of time. On hot days, within 30 minutes, temperatures could really soar to 140 to 190 degrees.”
We’ve heard local police and first responders having to go to a number of reports of pets locked in vehicles in recent days.
Keeping your home cool, he says, can be as easy as keeping shades drawn and lights off.
OTHER TIPS:
• About 40 percent of unwanted heat buildup in homes is through windows
• Use awnings or curtains to deflect the sun
• Fans will move air around, but does not lower your temperature
• Use air conditioning inside your home or visit a store or local mall
• Urban homes are more at risk of extreme heat, so know your local cooling centers
• Wear light-colored, loose-fitting, and lightweight clothing
• Avoid strenuous activity during mid-day
• Hydrate with water, not caffeinated or alcoholic beverages
• Never leave children or pets in a vehicle • Get trained in first aid to help when someone is suffering from heat illness
