PEORIA, Ill. – Lakeview Park in Peoria will have a new way for people to cool off on hot, summer days.
The Peoria Park District received a state OSLAD grant worth $600,000 to replace the outdoor swimming pool at Lakeview Park with a splash pad and spray park. The swimming pool has been closed since 2016, due to budget concerns and declining attendance.
“It does allow us to replace that lost facility,” said PPD Executive Director Emily Cahill. “And, it really gives us this opportunity to test out this idea, see how it works. But be in a place where a maximum number of people can access it.”
Cahill says the money could also allow the park district to add extra amenities to the splash pad and spray park, including changing facilities and outdoor restrooms.
She says another idea could include turning the pool area into a green space for families using Owens Recreational Center.
Cahill says the planned splash pad Lakeview Park is the first project in a 10 year plan to add similar facilities around the Peoria area. If successful, splash pads could also be added to the northern and western parts of the city.
She notes the trend in recent years by cities is to have splash pads and spray parks because of lower maintenance and operating costs. But, she knows there is still a place for outdoor public pools in cities.
“We’re trying to strike that balance, knowing that there are lots of ways to address this. And, we hope to be able to work with the community to find the best spots that make the most sense to serve the most people,” Cahill said.
Cahill says the project won’t get underway until next year.
