PEORIA, Ill. – The man in charge of school safety for Peoria Public Schools isn’t the only candidate for one of the five At Large seats on the Peoria City Council.
There’s at least two announced candidates. Longtime East Bluff resident and activist Lawrence Maushard announced on social media back in late-August he, too, is running. Demario Boone announced his candidacy Monday.
A Peoria native, writer, and former reporter for, among other outlets, the Pekin Daily Times, Maushard says it’s “far past time” for him to run, and that he wants to dedicate himself to what he calls the city’s underserved neighborhoods.
Maushard lists a number of priorities from upgrading street lighting and ending food deserts, to defending abortion rights and, in his words, fully funding the Fire Department while defunding the police.
