PEKIN, Ill. — Pekin’s Front Street has reopened following $6.2 million in upgrades near the city’s industrial park.
Pekin officials celebrated the event with a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday at Front and Distillery Road.
The project included complete replacement of concrete pavement, new curbs and gutters, a new storm sewer, and upgraded railroad crossings.
Pekin City Engineer Josie Esker told 25 News, all this was needed because more than 800 semi trucks travel through the area each day.
“People always had their commute interrupted by that truck traffic. It’s always 8 in the morning, just trucks always lined up, and so the community won’t have those trucks affecting their commute anymore,” Esker said.
The Front Street project was funded almost entirely by multiple grants.
