SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Legislation crafted after an Illinois State University graduate student ended up missing and later dead has been signed into law.
Governor JB Pritzker has signed what was called the “Jelani Day Bill” into law, taking effect January 1.
The measure requires local law enforcement to notify the FBI within 72 hours after a body has been discovered and not identified.
Officials have said Day drowned in the Illinois River in LaSalle County, but Day’s mother Carmen has said she believes foul play was involved.
Reacting on the “Justice for Jelani Day” Facebook page, Carmen Bolden Day said, “Even in bad times, God is still good!”
