UPDATED 2:58 P.M.
CHILLICOTHE, Ill. – Firefighters Wednesday battled a blaze at a home in Chillicothe, just off Illinois Route 29.
Crews were called to the area of the 15400 block of River Beach Drive around 10:25 a.m. following initial reports of a house fire.
Dispatchers indicated a mutual aid response to the fire, including as many as half a dozen local fire departments, including Peoria firefighters.
Chillicothe Fire Chief Marvin Roderick says that’s because there were no fire hydrants in the area, so a portable tank had to be used. He also says the heat was a factor for firefighters with outdoor temperatures in the 90’s, causing them to take more breaks.
The fire caused part of the home’s roof to collapse. Fire damage extended throughout much of the home, causing it to be deemed a total loss.
One person inside the home was able to get out safely, along with one of the homeowner’s cats.
Roderick says the fire is likely accidental, but investigators are working to pin down a specific cause.
