GALESBURG, Ill. – People are gathering Saturday to pay their final respects to a Knox County Sheriffs Deputy killed in the line of duty a week ago Friday.
Funeral services for Nicholas Weist, 34, will be Saturday afternoon at Galesburg High School.
It will be the culmination of the first of two processions for Weist, killed as he was laying out spike strips on U.S. 150 near the Knox/Henry County line to try and stop Daylon Richardson, 22, of Granite City — now facing murder charges — from continuing a chase with police.
That first procession will wind through parts of Mercer, Warren, and Knox Counties leading up to the funeral, and supporters are being encouraged to line the route.
Thousands of flags have already been placed on the GHS grounds.
The second procession will be after the funeral services, from GHS to Watson-Thomas Funeral Home in Galesburg for interment, which will be private.
Media are not allowed inside the funeral service, but the service will be streamed on the school’s YouTube Channel.
