GALESBURG, Ill. – The family of a fallen Knox County sheriffs deputy has issued their first public statement since their loved one was killed on the job almost a week ago.
Illinois State Police issued the statement on behalf of the sheriffs department and the family of Deputy Nicholas Weist, 34, who died after being struck by a car evading police last Friday, while he was putting out spike stripe near the Knox/Henry County line.
Weist’s family says Knox County lost a “true community hero” and that they’re grateful for everyone who’s helped them get through the, “most unnecessary, heartbreaking, painful, deplorable, tragic loss of our lives.”
The family says they’re also thankful for their extended police family, among others.
A funeral service for Weist will be Saturday afternoon at Galesburg High School.
Daylon Richardson, 22, of Granite City is jailed in Henry County on murder and other charges.
ISP says the family is declining all media interviews.
