LONDON – A non-staff advisor to the president of Ukraine says the move by Russian President Vladimir Putin to recognize two separatist regions of Ukraine as independent doesn’t change anything just yet, since Russia controlled the areas anyway.
“These territories are now recognized, as of tonight, by Russia as independent states,” said Andrew Mac with Asters, described as a Ukranian law firm. “Therefore, there can be no reconciliation with Ukraine.”
Mac tells WMBD’s Craig Collins the two regions and Ukraine had tried for years, but failed, to reach some form of peace — though he says Ukraine probably worked harder at it than the two regions.
Mac says if war or an invasion breaks out, it would be devastating for Ukraine.
“Because Russia has superior air power, and missile technology — and, as such, Russia would be able to have a huge tactical advantage,” said Mac. “However, if Russia were move in and try to occupy large swaths of Ukraine, we would definitely see insurgency.”
Mac says it would also lead to millions of Ukranians taking up arms.
He describes Ukraine as a “Second Amendment-type of place.”
