EAST PEORIA, Ill. – There’s already a riverfront walking and biking trail in East Peoria, but city leaders are still looking at how that trail can be expanded.
Ty Livingston, East Peoria’s Director of Planning and Community Development, says a feasibility study that’s been done sheds some light on possibilities.
“We have pieces of the trail already in place (in the area of Bass Pro Shops and other spots),” said Livingston. “What [the feasibility study] looked at is how to make connections between those pieces.”
Livingston is talking about connecting the McClugage and Bob Michel bridges — and now might almost be the time to figure that out, given that the rebuild of the McClugage includes a pedestrian bike path, and the proposed re-decking of the Michel has similar plans.
“As we look at opportunities to attract new residents to our area, what we see in a lot of communities across the country are these types of recreational opportunities,” said Livingston. “They’re not just recreational. They can also be for that communter daily traveling.”
Livingston says development is still in the early stages, but most residents who have seen the study so far seem in favor of some sort of expansion in the coming years.
