PEORIA, Ill. – If you believe what mostly Illinois Democratic lawmakers have just proposed, Congressman Darin LaHood just got himself drawn right out of a Congressional District.
A proposed map released by the legislature Friday shows seventeen Congressional Districts instead of eighteen, and it gives Peoria proper more of the 17th Congressional District, and the 16th District more of the rest of the immediate area. The 17th is currently represented by Democrat Cheri Bustos, who has opted not to seek another term in 2022, while the 16th is the home of Republican Adam Kinzinger.
“The proposed maps are a slap in the face to good governance everywhere,” said LaHood (R-Dunlap), in a statement. “Illinois voters deserve much better than this non-transparent, corrupt process.”
LaHood claims the maps are a way for Democrats to do more of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s bidding.
The map must still be approved by Illinois lawmakers. The redraw was required by the 2020 Census.
“Illinois Democrat legislators will stop at nothing to retain their corrupt grip on power in Springfield and Washington DC,” said State Rep. Ryan Spain (R-Peoria), in a statement. “The Democratic Congressional map was drawn by politicians to protect incumbent Democrats and disenfranchise voters throughout the State of Illinois.”
