This morning we talked about David Klein, the so called creator of Jelly Belly, giving away a candy factory. It seems there are some half truths about this….
Of course, Stephanie dove into the history of Jelly Belly after seeing the website for the contest was not a great website.
Here’s the contest, first of all….Klein says he’ll give away a CANDY FACTORY…not a Jelly Belly factory. It will cost you $50 to be part of scavenger hunt in your state. To win, you have to find a necklace he has hidden. This is happening in all 50 states. If you find the necklace, you automatically win $5,000 and are now in the running to win the candy factory.
Only 1000 tickets per state will be sold and you have to have a ticket in order to win.

Here’s where the half truths come into play….
Did David Klein create the Jelly Belly company?
No. Jelly Belly was originally called the Herman Goelitz Candy Company and was founded in 1898. Interestingly, Gustav Goelitz started the biz in Belleville, Illinois. Herman’s son moved to California in 1924 and they settled the company in Oakland. In 1960 they expanded to jelly beans and gummy bears. One of the new products was the mini jelly bean which was developed in 1965.
David Klein came into play in 1976. He was a candy and nut distributor and collaborated with Herman Rowland….who was the current president of the Herman Goelitz Candy Company. They created a new form of the mini jelly bean everyone loved. Klein called it the Jelly Belly as a tribute to the blues musician Lead Belly. THEN Klein sold the Jelly Belly trademark to Rowland in 1980…so essentially he doesn’t have the rights to the name anymore. And that’s where his story with Jelly Belly ends.
Within the contest, you aren’t actually getting a Jelly Belly factory. You will be getting a candy factory….but the contest might be a bit misleading.
