PEORIA, Ill. — More than 1,500 people are in Peoria and the surrounding areas this weekend for the Ledgestone Insurance Open, an annual disc golf tournament.
Overall, 1,355 disc golfers registered to play in the tournament that is taking place in Pekin, Morton, Peoria, and Eureka. In addition, spectator tickets were capped at 300 so golfers and spectators can follow social distancing protocols, said disc golfer Mark Jones.
“This year they sold 300 spectator passes, and all of them sold out,” said Jones. “Normally there’s a lot more but with [the virus] and social distancing they had to limit it to 300.”
Amateurs and professional disc golfers are in the area for the tournament, and Jones added how great the area is for the growing sport.
“[The Peoria area] is actually a hot-bed for disk golf. There’s a lot of local guys that do a great job of maintaining and taking care of the disc golf courses,” said Jones. “The course in Morton, where the pros are playing, is a very technical course.”
While the tournament is this weekend from Friday-Sunday, Jones said that most golfers have been in the area since early in the week to play practice rounds around the area.
