PEORIA, Ill. — The St. Jude Runs look a little different this year.
Since 1982, St. Jude Runs have raised nearly $62 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, according to Co-Founder Mike McCoy.
“We’ve seen the success rate overall for cancer at St. Jude is over 78% now, and some forms of cancer, they’re curing 97 or 98%, so it’s working,” said McCoy.
Due to COVID-19, St. Jude runners this year are logging their miles in their own home towns.
“We’re gonna run every hour until Saturday night, just like we were running back from Memphis. So, people have signed up, and every hour is covered with seven or eight people,” McCoy told WMBD’s Greg and Dan.
The St. Jude Memphis to Peoria runners were sent off virtually Tuesday morning.
There’s typically a large send-off from the St. Jude Runs Office off Sheridan Road in Peoria as the runners and support staff leave town in several dozen RVs.
The St. Jude Telethon, which usually culminates with runners from 35 satellite runs meeting up with the St. Jude Memphis to Peoria runners downtown, will air on 25 News Saturday beginning at 6:30 p.m. live from the Peoria Civic Center.
