I’ve been doing this for a long time, and every now and then an artist comes along that makes you kind of sit back and listen to the lyrics that pour from their heart, to their pen, and into their voice as they sing into the microphone. Luke Combs is one of those artist for me. Over the past 30+ years of listening to thousands of songs by thousands of artists who are just hoping someone at a radio station gives their record a play…and likes it. My first listen to Luke Combs was a ‘holy crap, this kid is good’ moment, wasting no time listening to more and more of his songs. Now he has done something that in the 56-year history of Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart that only one other artist has done…have their first two albums spend more than 20 weeks at Number 1. His debut album This One’s For You, spent 50 weeks in the top spot, and the follow up What You See Is What You Get just hit 20 weeks at number one.
Taylor Swift was the first one to do it by the way.
Alabama: Their 1980 major-label debut album, My Home’s in Alabama, peaked at No. 3 on Top Country Albums, but each of its next three albums logged 20 or more weeks at No. 1. 1981’s Feels So Right and 1982’s Mountain Music each logged 28 weeks at No. 1; 1983’s The Closer You Get… spent 21 weeks on top.
Garth Brooks: The 1989 debut album peaked at No. 2 on Top Country Albums, but his next two albums both had long runs on top. 1990’s No Fences had 41 weeks at No. 1; 1991’s Ropin’ the Wind had 33 weeks on top.
Shania Twain: Shania’s 1993 debut album peaked at No. 67 on Top Country Albums (I actually owned that album), but her next two albums were both hugely successful. The Woman in Me spent 29 weeks at No. 1. followed by Come on Over with 50 weeks on top.
