PEORIA, Ill. — The Peoria Park District announced that all public facilities will be closed from March 16 through March 30 to help reduce the spread of coronavirus.
Emily Cahill, the District’s Executive Director, said that programs and activities during that time frame will be canceled or postponed.
“We will have outreach to everybody who is affected by the closures,” Cahill said.
Outdoor parks and trails will not be closed to the public.
“We ask people to think about good social distancing and making good choices,” Cahill said. “People are encouraging the opportunity for you to go out into nature and we certainly want to invite people into those spaces to use them responsibly.”
Even though Park District facilities and activities are closed, they will still be busy to keep the community involved.
“We’re also really excited to use our social media platforms to try to provide access to some interesting activities or engagement opportunities to share those facilities that have to be closed over the next two weeks,” Cahill said.
They’ll be working with the RiverPlex to provide online exercise opportunities, the Peoria Playhouse Children’s Museum for art and science activities. The Park District will also work with the Peoria Zoo and Forrest Park Nature Center.
“Other facilities in our inventory will all be providing some consistent ongoing outreach engagement to everybody through social media,” Cahill said.
