PEORIA, Ill. — Richwoods High School ranks in the top 5,000 STEM high schools for 2019.
Newsweek announced that the local high school was named number 2,968 on the overall list, and number 1,789 on the public school list for excellence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Richwoods principal Brett Elliot said it is an honor.
“We’re really excited for Richwoods to be recognized nationally,” Elliot said. “To be recognized for our STEM offering is a huge honor and the positive attention to Richwoods High School and Peoria Public Schools is a true honor for our faculty, staff, and students.”
Richwoods offers over 50 Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, CTE, and Dual Credit classes that have a heavy focus on STEM that is embedded throughout the courses.
“I think that’s what kind of sets us apart. Between Advanced Placement, Dual Credit, Career Tech., and then we infuse it into all our curriculums throughout,” Elliot said.
Elliot said that Richwoods is putting an emphasis on closing the minority gap.
“In the last three years, we’ve added 516 minority students to the first Dual Credit or Advanced Credit course. I think that’s a huge accomplishment for Richwoods and its amazing for all of our students,” Elliot said.
